Lets start off with hosting fundamentals. Hosting is required to facilitate a website's presence on the Internet. They are several services for hosting a website.
Dedicated hosting is a form where all resources are available solely to your websites. You pretty much have full control over a physical server. This Is the most reliable and secure website presence. But do you really need a dedicated server? yes and no. This hosting is pretty pricey, upwards at $100 per month on preferred providers ex. GoDaddy. The eBay company is a perfect example of why you need a dedicated server. The server solely belongs to the eBay brand therefore it is probably less prone to security breaches and downtime. In general if I am selling at such a high volume. I would personally opt for this type of hosting with security being my utmost concern. Now if I am not selling any thing which is what i am currently doing. I would go for a free shared host.
Shared hosting shares physical space with your website and other people's sites. For example there is a simple and free classifieds site that I own. It is currently hosted by a free hosting provider for the past 2 years. I have made $600 from this site in those 2 years and no selling was involved, just AdSense revenue from Google. In the 2 years I owned his site I basically paid for the annual domain registration fee. Point is a paid host was not required because I was not selling anything. Now there is some downside with this type of hosting. If someone's site or yours is compromised. You will experience some downtime because the techs will have to physically repair the server the attack occurred on. Not much downtime though my free host is pretty reliable, some others may not be that reliable. Another issue I have experience with free host is their Terms and conditions. There is no high bandwidth sites allowed, examples are gaming sites, video tube sites etc...I also have a couple of porn sites. I purchase a paid shared hosting plan for those. When you pay certain limitations are removed thus you are free to host virtually any website you want.
To conclude hosting is a prerequisite for all site owners on a large and small scale. The type of site you own will dictate it's appropriate service.
