Why YOU Should Have Your Own Webpage

In this day and age where information is transmitted faster that the speed of light, there is a shift in how people and businesses stand out from the crowd. Gone are the days when marketing relied on not much else but a good portfolio and PR skills. Today, in order to get ahead of the pack, you must be standing in a virtual pulpit, ready to preach your word and offer information with one click to anyone who wants to know more.
There are practically dozens, if not hundreds of reasons why you should have your own webpage. A webpage has become another form of ID... think of it as your virtual social security. You are enlisting yourself in an online directory where millions of people search for products and services, advice, information, horoscopes, education, boyfriends, wives-everything!
With the internet, the playing field has been leveled in that your small business can now have as much of a shot at getting a project from a reputable client as the big shots. If you're a small business engaged in baking, photography or graphic design, having your own webpage is a one stop shop for potential clients to see your work. It's your own little office in cyberspace where you can invite people in, say a little something about yourself, your business philosophy, and showcase your work. If you're an organization, your website can be your recruitment booth, letting people know about your mission, your vision, and how and why they should join.
Different people have different motivations for having a website. Here are some of the more common motivations for having your own website:
Starting a business with the hopes of establishing a legitimate presence. Say I was a photographer who is just about to start out in commercial photography, and I would like to find a way to give my venture a semblance of professionalism. For sure, I would make my own website. Not only will my website showcase the best of my work (even though they weren't paid projects), it will also provide my prospective clients a single reference point for everything they need to know about me before sealing a deal: my work philosophy, my rates, my samples, my office address email address and telephone number.
Sharing your knowledge with the world. I am an avid traveler, and many of my trips are to off the beaten track kinds of places. I rely on the internet for advice on suggested itineraries, but sometimes I find that information on certain places is hard to come by. After a trip to Rome, I decided to build my own website on the lesser known parts wherein I traveled, to help other people who might be interested in making the same trip.
To create a tool for persuasion. Your website can be about your advocacy such as promoting green living. Or it can be about the hope to create a paradigm shift in your own little way, about gender equality or perhaps about who people should vote for on the latest season of American Idol. Whatever you stand up for, there is always a way to get it out there on the internet. For those who feel that building their own website is a daunting task, you should know that there are lots of web building software available to categorize your page as an easy website in terms of construction.
To document life as it happens. Blogging has made it so much easier and organized to record the daily happening in one's life. Sometimes having your own webpage doesn't need to have a grand agenda, it could simply be for your own enjoyment. I have a Wordpress account where I make my own website for free, and under this account I have my travel blog, my cooking blog and my personal blog. My personal blog is my "whatever" blog, where I record my thoughts on a movie I just watched, my recent birthday or any random realization I had. It's my place to distress, to unload.
To create a money generating venture. Many people buy their own private domains for a few dollars to set up their websites and wait for the money to come in. Having a well-maintained website that has relevant content can generate a lot of traffic, and this is desirable to companies that are looking to 'new media' i.e. the internet, to advertise. Ad space can be sold to interested businesses or affiliates, and your website can be a money generating venture that gives you rewards every time site visitors click on links.
There's practically no excuse to not have your own website. There are resources that can help you build your own easy website, and you don't even have to put any money out to get one. Setting up and having your own website is a fun and rewarding way to spend your free time.
