What Are cPanel Dedicated Servers?

cPanel dedicated servers are run on a Unix web based control panel that provides a graphical user interface and automation tools that were developed to save many hours of basic and more advanced, essential administrative tasks to host multiple web sites. cPanel provides a 3 tier structure that offers features for administrators, resellers, and end-users of web sites to administer and control various aspects of website and server administration through a standard web browser using ports 2083, 2086 & 2087. Along with the graphical user interface; GUI, cPanel also has command line and API-based access that allows third party software providers, web hosting companies, and developers to automate basic system administration tasks.
cPanel is designed to function either as a dedicated server or virtual private server. As of November 2012, Cpanel supports CentOS versions 5.x & 6.x, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® versions 5.x & 6.x and CloudLinux 5.x. cPanel no longer supports FreeBSD or any other Operating Systems at this point in time. A server with at least a 1 Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, and 10GB's of hard disk space is recommended to run Cpanel reliably and efficiently.
In choosing a server, consider these factors:
How many web sites you are planning to host? For instance if your future cpanel dedicated server will host several websites, each with their own group of email addresses, MySQL databases etc. then the server will indeed require more CPU power, hard drive space, and RAM.
What kind of web hosting are you planning to host? While cPanel/WHM will run on the minimum requirements, the server will need more processing speed, space, and memory if you plan to stream videos, music, or applications like forums and chat rooms.
Application-based support includes Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Perl, and BIND(DNS). Email based support includes POP3, IMAP, SMTP services. The end-user part of cPanel is commonly accessed on port 2082, with an SSL-secured server operating on port 2083. The administrator and reseller part of cPanel which is known as the Web Host Manager (WHM), runs on ports 2087 and 2086 respectively. cPanel must be installed on a fresh newly installed and formatted hard drive. cPanel should never be installed on a dedicated server that is already in use. Once installed, cPanel is very difficult to remove. The server must be formatted, and the operating system reinstalled.
Among the many features cPanel offers, cPanel will also allow you to monitor your website(s) and server for resource use, visitor statistics and vulnerabilities from outdated software or recent random exploits in the OS or cPanel itself. It is advised that automatic cPanel updates are turned on to ensure the server is updated with the latest patches and security fixes. cPanel will notify you of any major incidences and provide easy to follow instructions in order to secure your dedicated server.
