Hosting Service Or Domain Names

Latest News

This is kind of like the 'chicken or the egg' argument. Hosting is taking your website, and website address, and making it live on the Internet. A domain name is the actual website address people type into their Internet browser. If you're just starting out online and you don't have either a domain name or hosting service, which one should you get first... and why? There are arguments to both sides, but I'm going to explain why I recommend buying a domain name first.

Whats important to know first is that there are companies that do both hosting and domain registrars, but I would argue they don't do both particularly well. Most professionals I know have different companies for different services, and there's probably a good reason why the professionals do it this way. While it might be easier to have a 'one-stop shop' for both these services, you'll find the costs are relatively the same whether you buy them together or buy them separately. What you're looking for is professionalism, great customer service, reliability and results.

I recommend buying a domain name first because a domain name is far more important that getting hosting service. A domain name should be carefully thought out and carefully picked. A domain name is your brand. A domain name is your online image. A domain name is 'virtual real estate, and having a piece of virtual real estate that no one else can claim is priceless.

With that being said, not all domain registrars are created equally. Some are definitely better than others. For instance, when you buy a domain name, you must point the domain name to your nameservers in order to make your domain name go live on the Internet. Now if you haven't gotten hosting service yet, which I recommend, this won't matter right now. However, my point is that good domain registrar companies can change nameservers and have the changes take affect in a matter of minutes. On the other hand, less reputable and reliable companies can take up to 48 hours to redirect the nameservers. Can you imagine waiting 48 hours before you can start making changes on your website or making your website go live? That's insane!

So when you first buy a domain name, it will be directed to the default nameservers for that company. When you go and buy your hosting service next, you'll then redirect your nameservers to the new ones you just got from your hosting service. You want those changes to take effect in the shortest amount of time possible. When you buy your hosting service, the first question you'll get asked is if you already have a domain name or if you need to buy a domain name. This is where you will already have a domain name. I'm not going to mention names of companies I like, but you can do a Google search on hosting companies and domain name registrars to start your research.

One thing I highly recommend doing is setting the nameservers during the checkout process when you're buying a domain name. This will make the changes instant and set the domain name to your server immediately. Most people overlook this step or miss it completely, so be on the lookout for where you can set the nameservers. Now this isn't possible if you're just starting out and haven't bought hosting service yet, but it works perfectly going forward. Bottom line is you want to save yourself time and have the flexibility to buy a domain name and put up a website in the shortest time possible. For some Internet marketing techniques, timing is everything!
