You need to be aware of the current algorithm changes and what may be coming in the future, however, including how Google and other search engines use the quality of your content in order to determine search engine rankings. It seems Google is putting more and more emphasis on originality, length, and latent semantic indexing.
In other words, Google is rewarding websites that have longer, more meaningful articles that are unique (instead of using the exact same text or very similar on many other websites). Perhaps the best long-term strategy you can develop for search engine optimization is to create the best content you can with your visitors in mind. Try to create that type of content that deserves to be at the top of the search results -- the kind of content that your visitors might naturally link to -- even if you realistically still have to do a lot of promotion yourself.

Getting inbound links to your website still continues to be one of the primary strategies for improving your search engine rankings, and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Please be aware, however, that the standard ways of building links may become less effective over time, so you have to focus on diversification. Instead of relying on the same websites over and over, it is best to get inbound links from as many different websites as possible.
Also, be careful with shortcuts like automated software tools that build hundreds or even thousands of links in a short time. This is certain to raise a red flag with Google and other search engines, and your rankings may suffer in the future for these practices (if they haven't already). One example is article submission software that sends out your content to thousands of directories at once. For one thing, you have to be careful with building links too quickly like we already mentioned (especially if you're promoting a brand-new website). It's also best not to use the same article when submitting to so many different directories. Even if this doesn't get you penalized, per se, it would likely be far less effective than submitting unique versions to various directories.
